\\ˌ ̷ ̷ˌ ̷ ̷ ̷ ̷ˈlāshən\ noun (-s)
Etymology: phosphoryl + -ation
: the process of phosphorylating either by reaction with inorganic phosphate or by transfer of phosphate from another organic phosphate; especially : the enzymatic conversion of carbohydrates into their phosphoric esters in metabolic processes (as of glucose to glucose 6-phosphate by adenosine triphosphate and the enzyme hexokinase)

it was shown that oxidative phosphorylation was the link between fermentation and respiration on the one hand, and life on the other — V.R.Potter
